Cat Ba Island to Hanoi Route Logistics & Driver Insights
Road Decision
From Cat Ba Town or Beo Harbour, we drive north along Provincial Road DT356 across the island to Cai Vieng Pier. After crossing by ferry to Dong Bai Terminal on Cat Hai Island, we cross the Tan Vu – Lach Huyen sea bridge and join Expressway CT04 westbound straight into central Hanoi. We completely avoid the congested National Route QL5 and its industrial truck traffic.Operational Reality
The main variable on the return journey is ferry queuing at Cai Vieng Pier, particularly on Sunday afternoons when domestic weekend holidaymakers leave the island simultaneously. Severe weather or sudden maritime fog in the Bay can temporarily halt ferry crossings. Once on the mainland, Expressway CT04 provides fast driving, but severe evening congestion often builds at the Ring Road 3 interchange and Thanh Tri Bridge approach when entering eastern Hanoi between 17:00 and 19:30.Seasonal Notes
October through April offers pleasant, dry travel conditions with predictable ferry schedules. Peak domestic travel occurs during summer weekends (May to August), causing heavy Sunday afternoon return queues at Cai Vieng Pier. Tropical typhoons in July and August can occasionally cause temporary suspensions of maritime ferry crossings.Pickup & Drop-off Specifics
On Cat Ba Island, drivers pick up directly from hotels in Cat Ba Town (Mot Thang Tu Street, Nui Ngoc Street), beachfront resorts at Cat Co 1, 2, and 3, or directly at the passenger docks of Beo Harbour (Cai Beo) for cruise disembarkations, and Gia Luan Pier. In Hanoi, drop-offs are provided at any hotel in Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Tay Ho, or Dong Da districts. For narrow Old Quarter alleys or weekend pedestrian zones, drop-off is provided at the closest accessible street corner.Cat Ba Island to Hanoi — Route Details and Distance

Reviews for Cat Ba Island to Hanoi

Good clean electric sedan and polite driver. Just be aware if you leave Cat Ba on a Sunday afternoon, the line for the car ferry at Cai Vieng gets massive with weekend tourists heading home. We waited almost an hour just to get the car on the boat. Once on the mainland expressway, the drive into Hanoi was very fast though.

Driver was waiting right outside the Beo Harbour gate at 11:30 sharp when our cruise tender dropped us off. We had 3 big hard-shell cases so the SUV was definitely the right move over a small sedan. Smooth ferry crossing and got us to our hotel in the Old Quarter in about 3.5 hours.
